Tennessee Temple has added a Honduras under-20 national player to its women's soccer team. Standout midfielder Sonia Hernandez has enrolled at the local university and will join the Lady Crusaders for spring workouts in preparation for the fall 2013 season. She is the third player TTU coach Emmanuel Awotula has brought in from a July showcase in Florida of eight international players. Hernandez, who recently turned 18, had her high school graduation in November. She played high school and club soccer as well as on the national team and said she had 21 offers from American colleges. "Coach made an offer and I looked at his school and liked it, and now I am here," she said Monday, adding that she wants ultimately to go to medical school and become a doctor. "She's very smart," Awotula said. As for soccer, he said, "she controls the midfield and has great vision and the ability to pick out a player and get the ball to her. She can get us settled, and her creativity -- wow!"
